It was a milestone weekend for a senior on the No. 5 Washington Demon wrestling team (16-0) . Andrew Waite, a three-time state qualifier, tallied his 100th varsity victory in the opening match of the Al Garrison Duals Saturday in Waukee.
Washington began the dual tournament against Waukee’s junior varsity squad. Waite joined the Demons’ 100 win club by pinning Jack Smith one minutes into their grapple at 138 pounds. He joins classmates Kyle Anderson and Trey Van Weelden as current wrestlers with more than 100 varsity victories. Waite left Waukee with five wins total; three pinfalls, a major decision, and a victory by forfeit. His efforts helped Washington capture the tournament championship, beating Class 3A No. 9 Johnston in the title match, 35-30.
The Washington Demon wrestling team ends the first half of the season tonight at home in a non-conference quadrangular. The Demons will grapple athletes from Alburnett, Iowa City Regina, and Wapello. First matches are set to begin at 6 p.m.
