The recent batch of winter weather didn’t prevent the Washington archery teams from holding their first home shoot of the season. Nearly 400 archers came to Washington High School Saturday for the Washington Archery Shoot. The event included students from Albia, Cardinal, Center Point-Urbana, Mount Vernon, Cedar Rapids Prairie Point, Solon, and Washington. Mount Vernon claimed first place in each division.
The Washington middle school and high school squads placed second in their fields. The middle schoolers recorded a score of 3,219, while the high schoolers tallied 3,271 points. Allison Rees topped the 68-person middle school girls field with 289 out of a possible 300 points. She tallied 19 bullseyes. Four high school archers posted scores of 280 or higher. Griffin Wood led the way with 282 points and 18 bullseyes. James Zabel, Samantha Mellinger, and John Sands each recorded scores of 281.
The Lincoln Elementary School finished third out of their three-team field with 2,398 points. Makynna Morgan had the team’s high score of 247 points with seven bullseyes.
The Washington archery teams resume their season on January 7 in the Cardinal Shooting Comets Shoot. First flights are set for 8 a.m. in Eldon.
