Hillcrest Union was full Tuesday night as the Iowa Mennonite School honored the only state basketball team in program history. Members of the 1992 Class 1A state champion basketball team returned to the Iowa Mennonite School for a 25-year anniversary celebration; IMS hosted the Louisa-Muscatine Falcons in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference doubleheader.

The championship squad was recognized in between games and the faculty had an additional surprise for head coach Dwight Gingerich. Gingerich, in his 34th year at IMS, was the court at Hillcrest Union would be bare his name. As heard live on AM/FM KCII, IMS outlasted the Louisa-Muscatine Falcons, 58-45. Nick Yutzy topped IMS with 20 points, including converting nine of 12 from the free throw line. Cole Yoder added 10 points. The win pushes the Iowa Mennonite School’s winning streak to three games, improving their overall record to 5-3.

The IMS girls’ basketball team had a halftime lead against Louisa-Muscatine before falling to the Falcons, 48-36. L&M outscored IMS 28-14 in the second half. Suzanna Yoder led the way with 15 points, while Rachel Miller added 12. IMS is now winless in their first seven games.
