West Branch High School had been a recent house of horrors for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls basketball team.
The Golden Hawks turned their bad luck around Tuesday, taking a 60-57 River Valley Conference win over the Bears. Mid-Prairie jumped on West Branch early, going on a 13-1 run in the first quarter aided by a technical foul on the West Branch coaching staff. Trailing 19-5, the Bears put together a 12-0 run, which Mid-Prairie answered with nine straight of their own, leaving the game at 33-26 at the half. In the third quarter, the Bears climbed within three points on three different occasions but the Hawks always had an answer. Down the stretch the Bears got within 51-50, but the Hawks did enough at the free throw line with Addie Rath and Ali Butters combining to go seven of 10 at the line down the stretch to secure the win.
Butters led the way with 21 points, Addie Rath added 14 for the Hawks. With the win, Mid-Prairie has won four in a row and stands at 5-3 on the year going into Christmas break.
