Two shorthanded wrestling teams traveled to Washington High School for a triangular versus the No. 5 Demons (18-0) Tuesday night. Washington grappled athletes of Alburnett and Iowa City Regina. Several open weight classes led to a pair of victories for the Demons.
Washington scored four pinfalls, a technical fall, and six wins by forfeit to best Regina, 65-15. Garrett Ikerd (120: 1:33), Karlton Skubal (195; 0:38), and Tanner Murphy (220; 0:32) pinned their opponents before the end of the first period. Andrew Waite (138: 3:33), this week’s KCII Hedge Above Lawncare Athlete of the Week, had Washington’s other win by fall.
The Demons capped off the night with seven contest matches versus Alburnett. Washington won two by fall and another by decision in a 57-16 triumph. Waite (138; 0:46) and Trey Van Weelden (152; 1:11) bested their opponents by fall in the first period.
Washington wrestling enters winter break undefeated in 18 duals. The Demons will resume their season on January 5, traveling to Fort Madison for a Southeast Conference dual versus the Bloodhounds.
