The City of Sigourney will test their new tornado siren system for the first time Monday. The city recently purchased two sirens to add to their existing one, because a single siren was no longer sufficient due to the city’s size and geographic makeup. The two new sirens are placed by the city’s water tower and near the elementary school at the corner of Jefferson and Hickory Streets. The original siren was relocated near the sewer lagoon on the east side of the city.
According to Sigourney Police Chief Allan Glandon, the new system will sound differently from the old one. The tones will come from a different direction than people are used to, and the new sirens are electromechanical while the old one is electronic. The project was funded by state and federal grants, as well as some money from local funds. Glandon is unsure exactly what time the sirens will be tested Monday, so he reminds people no matter what time it comes it’s only a test.
