Ten Washington Demon wrestlers spent their Saturday grappling in the Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational at Solon High School. The Spartans’ annual tournament featured wrestlers from Albia, Center Point-Urbana, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Clear Creek-Amana, Iowa Valley, Lisbon, North Cedar, Solon, Vinton-Shellsburg, WACO, Wapello, West Branch and West Liberty. Washington left Solon with a fourth place team finish, scoring 144.5 points. Lisbon won the tournament title with 237.5 points.
Washington didn’t record an individual champion but was represented in final matches by Kyle Anderson (126) and Karlton Skubal (195). Anderson, The Predicament’s No. 6 wrestler, received a bye in the first round before posting a technical fall victory in the quarterfinal round over North Cedar’s Cole Taylor, 19-3. His semifinal grapple resulted in a 9-2 decision win over Lisbon’s Ryne Mohrfeld. Anderson lost by pinfall 38 seconds in his championship bout versus Solon’s Drew West, The Predicament’s Class 2A No. 1 wrestler.
After drawing a bye in the opening round, Skubal pinned his way to the title match. Skubal, The Predicament’s No. 5 wrestler, earned first round wins by fall versus Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Jordan Jacobus (0:28) in the quarterfinals and Iowa Valley’s Jayson Krakow (1:12) in the semifinals. He was brought to his back in the championship round by West Liberty’s Bryce Esmoil 1:25 into the second period. Esmoil is The Predicament’s Class 2A No. 1 grappler.
Garrett Ikerd (113), Andrew Waite (138) and Tristin Westphal-Edwards (160) all won consolation bracket matches, taking third place overall. The No. 5 Washington Demon wrestling team (20-0) continues their season Saturday in the East Marshall Varsity Duals tournament. First matches are set for 9 a.m. at East Marshall High School.
