Since 2006, Iowa’s number of Community Supported Agriculture programs has increased by about 62%. According to Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey there are now more than 80 CSAs across the state. CSAs provide fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables to customers. The way it works – farmers sell subscriptions to a box of fresh produce which are then delivered to the subscribers or pickup sites on a regular basis, weekly or bi-weekly.
The boxes offer a variety of food depending on the specific CSA program, and may include fruits, vegetables, eggs, baked goods, herbs and honey. By signing up for the subscription, members get a portion of the harvest and share in the abundance of a good growing year as well as the lower quantities during difficult growing conditions. Northey says now is a good time to consider joining a local CSA, to find a list of them click here and here.
