The No. 12 ranked Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls basketball team advanced through the first round of the class 3A regional tournament Saturday night, knocking off West Burlington 67-31 in Wellman.
It was a defensive battle in the first half with Mid-Prairie leading 11-6 after one quarter. The Golden Hawks went on an 8-2 run in the second quarter to lead 19-12 at the half. In the second half Mid-Prairie exploded, knocking down three straight three point goals to start the third they outscored the Falcons 22-8 in the frame to lead 41-20 going to the fourth. In the final quarter the three point barrage would continue. In total Mid-Prairie hit nine three point goals in the second half, five from Delaney Smith, Anna Vilovchik had three and Addie Rath had one. Mid-Prairie was led by Addie Rath with 18 points, Delaney Smith had 15 and Ireland Hostetler finished with 10. With the win Mid-Prairie is now 16-6 on the year and will next be in action Wednesday as part of the regional semifinals when they host Central Lee.
