Multiple area wrestlers punched their ticket to the Class 1A state individual wrestling tournament over the weekend. Three Sigourney-Keota wrestlers and one grappler from Highland and WACO will compete for a state title starting this Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The wrestlers qualified for state after placing in the top two of this weekend’s district wrestling tournament.
Representing Sigourney-Keota at the state meet will be Mason Dye (106), Kaleb Reeves (195), and Noah Boender (220). Reeves pinned his way to a Class 1A District 5 championship. His semifinal bout lasted all of 17 seconds before he brought East Union’s Beau Boswell to his back. The championship match saw him pin Moravia’s Quinton Casteel 26 seconds into the second period. This is Reeves’ third trip to the state wrestling tournament. Dye and Boender placed second in their weight divisions and will also move onto the state tournament. Dye is a first-time state qualifier while Boender is advancing to state for a third straight season.
Highland’s Cory Stewart (132) and WACO’s Cody Crawford (285) are also headed to the state wrestling tournament after second-place finishes in the Class 1A District 8 tournament. Crawford qualified for the tournament for a second straight season, placing eighth last year at 285 pounds. Stewart is a first-time qualifier. First matches of the 2017 Iowa High School Athletic Association’s State Wrestling tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
