The smallest 2A school in Iowa is one step away from competing at the state tournament. The Class 2A District 9 championship game was held Tuesday night at Washington High School featuring the Highland Huskies (19-4) and the Central Lee Hawks (11-12). Four Huskies finished in double figures as Highland won, 74-56.
Highland jumped out to a14-8 lead after one-quarter and held 25-21 at halftime. The Huskies outscored Central Lee, 49-25, in the second half. Highland closed the game with 29 points in the final quarter. Jake Wood scored a team-high 17 points. Zach Lasek poured in 16 points while Chase Rath and Trent Lasek added 14 points each.
The victory is the 19th of the season for Highland and advances the Huskies to the Class 2A Substate 5 championship game against the Pella Christian Eagles (18-4). The game will be held at Oskaloosa High School at 7 p.m. The winner will clinch a spot in the state tournament. Listen to KCII for live coverage of area postseason basketball.
