Do you know in which state the North Platte and South Platte Rivers meet – Nebraska or New Mexico? A fifth-grade student at Lincoln Elementary School in Washington answered similar questions and is now a semifinalist for the National Geographic State Bee. Will Gilchrist-Brock will be competing in Iowa’s state bee on March 31st. School bees were held four fourth-eighth grade students to determine each school champion and those champions then took a qualifying test.

The National Geographic Society has invited up to 100 of these top-scoring students in each of the 50 states to compete in state bees, including Gilchrist-Brock. The Iowa winner will advance to the National Geographic Bee Championship in May in Washington, D.C. The national winner will be awarded a $50,000 college scholarship as well as a trip to the Galapagos Islands.
