June 2nd is known as National Doughnut Day, a time to get an irresistibly sweet treat from your local bakery or coffee shop.
But there’s one local shop that won’t be ringing in the occasion this year. The Kalona Bakery has been closed since a fire damaged the space on June 25, 2016. This week the owners of the bakery announced on their Facebook page that they are putting the bakery up for sale. The post states they tried to get the funds to reopen the business, but insurance had left them short financially. In the year since the fire, the owners Jon and Stephanie Troyer used a food truck to serve breakfast and lunch around the Kalona community while trying to figure out how to reopen the store. The Troyers have owned the bakery since 2015, and the bakery was operated for 35 years prior to that. The Troyers could not be reached for comment on their decision to sell the business, but their Facebook post asks for serious inquiries for those who wish to purchase the bakery. Casey Peck of the Kalona Chamber of Commerce comments that it takes a lot of time to rebuild a business, but she wants to see the bakery reopen.
