The Washington softball team rebounded nicely on Friday by winning both of their games in West Branch to take the tourney title.
In game one, it was all business for the Demons as they hit their way to a 14-4 win against Vinton-Shellsburg. The Demons produced heavy traffic on the base paths early but only could scratch across one run in the first three innings. With the Demons up 1-0 in the fourth the Vikettes took the lead after a Natalie Boyer two run home run to give Vinton-Shellsburg their first lead of the contest. It was short lived however, as the Demons were finally able to break through with seven runs in the fourth inning, thanks to a string of six hits. Washington tacked on six more in the fifth including a walk-off two run home run off the bat of Haylee Wilson for the Demons to seal the 14-4 mercy rule win. Morgan Brinning led the Demons going 3-for-4 with a RBI. Molly Sparks went five innings in the circle giving up four runs.
After West Branch defeated the Vikettes in their first contest, the Demons and Bears were set up for a glorified championship game in the round robin tournament. The Bears jumped on the Demons early by plating two runs in the first after a RBI double by Taylor Thein. The Demons cut into the lead in the second when Kaitlyn Mitchell was able to score off of a pass ball. After both teams were able to scratch across two more runs, the Demons were down 4-3 going into the sixth. A couple singles by Mitchell and Wilson set up the eventual game winning two RBI double by Jessie Buccholz. The game was called after six innings due to time constraints and the Demons captured their first tournament title of the season. Alexa Mitchell went six strong innings of four run ball in the circle. Buccholz finished the game going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
No time to celebrate for the Demons, as they get right back on the diamond for a tournament in Oskaloosa today. Washington is in the middle of a busy ten game stretch lasting only six days.
