Trekfest is a welcome celebration for Star Trek fans, but the Riverside Area Community Club has planned this year’s 33rd Annual Trekfest to be a festival for all community members to enjoy.

Trekfest Director Kevin Meller says the planning committee has worked with the community to beef up the schedule of activities, “The big goal for me was to try to just really expand on it, attendance has been down the last few years. It was something that I felt that if we kind of got the community involved again, make it more of a party and just try to have fun and get everybody involved that we’d inject some life into it again.”

This year there aren’t any planned guest speakers for trekkies, but there won’t be a lack of entertainment in Hall Park this Saturday, as there are five bands scheduled to perform, beginning at 7:30 a.m. until midnight. The festival also reinstated the coed softball tournament. RACC is collaborating with the fire department for kids activities, St. Mary’s Church for a pancake breakfast Saturday morning, and the Iowa Friends for Companion Animals for a taco lunch. Meller says all the trek-themed activities from last year will be returning, but they are striving to make the festival enjoyable for non-trekkies alike. The Big Red Radio will be broadcasting live from Trekfest this Saturday in the KCII Summer Town Tour.
