Soil moisture levels in southeast Iowa worsened last week.

According to the recent USDA crop progress and condition report, in southeast Iowa topsoil moisture is 24% very short, 54% short, and only 22% is adequate, down from 43% the week before. In regards to subsoil moisture locally 12% is very short, 38% short, and 50% adequate, down 11 points from the last report. The southeast region is the driest for topsoil and subsoil moisture currently. According to State Climatologist Harry Hillaker, the accumulated precipitation from June 19-25 in Washington County and contiguous counties was less than an inch.
