In a final tune-up before the season officially kicks off the Washington football team will host Muscatine tonight in the annual Gatorade scrimmage.
In the exhibition event the format will be three sets of 10 plays for each team. Ten plays for the Demons will happen in a blink, as we get a first look at the speedy up-tempo offense for the 2017 campaign. Ryan Reighard knows something about speed, returning for his third season as a dual-threat quarterback for the Demons. The senior managed nearly 2,000 all-purpose yards for the prolific offense last year. New faces will surround the defense after losing several players to graduation. Tanner Murphy will be a key contributor on that side of the ball returning with 54 tackles and five sacks from 2016.
The Muskies are coming off of a 5-4 season but have a new look for 2017, losing key players from a year ago. They will have to replace their quarterback, top two rushers, and all of their receivers. Jackson Foulk is their leading returner defensively with 35 tackles last season.
The freshman and junior varsity teams will scrimmage at 5 p.m. at the practice fields with the varsity scrimmage set for 7 p.m. at Case Field. Admission into tonight’s contest is any sports drink that is for the players’ use throughout the season.
