It was the Abel Mena show on Friday night as the senior helped the Columbus Community (1-0) football team hold off Winfield-Mt. Union (0-1) 27-13 in the season opener.
The Wolves jumped out to an early lead getting the scoring started in the second quarter with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Christian Gerot to Daunte Oepping. Quickly down 7-0, Mena and the Wildcats took over. The dual-threat quarterback showed off his speed with touchdown runs of 87, 93, and two yards. He later went to work through the air as well with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tommy Pretz. Trying to make a late push the Wolves scored on a 79-yard kickoff return by Juanito Piper but it was not enough as the Wildcats held off WMU to capture the area bragging rights. Columbus finished the night with 312 yards on the ground including 198 yards by Mena on 14 carries. He also went 2-2 through the air for 34 yards and a touchdown. Gerot went 6-17 for 86 yards and a touchdown for the Wolves.
