Creative thinking, problem solving, and working cooperatively will all be encouraged at Highland Elementary’s inaugural STEM Day this Friday.

Technology Integration Specialist Angie Alberts and Elementary Instructional Coach Janelle Sulhoff are coordinating this event that will provide several activities for all kindergarten-fifth grade students to use science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Sulhoff explains the event’s purpose, “Part of our role as instructional coach and tech. integrationist is to help students and teachers both think outside the box, and do some different learning other than what they’re typically doing with their curriculum on a day-to-day basis. So we wanted to make sure we were giving students that opportunity to think of some science, technology, engineering, math activities that they could take and put into the real world and problem solve through some of those situations that you would see in your day-to-day life outside of school.”

Students will each choose four activities which include presentations from the Highland robotics team and Washington County 4-H/Youth Coordinator Amy Green. Alberts and Sulhoff are grateful for all the community material donations that are making the event possible.
