The Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams hit the road to Columbus Community on Tuesday and came out of town with a pair of victories.
In the girls game the Wolves got out to an early lead and held on for a 48-44 win. The Wolves led 12-9 after the first and 27-21 at half. The lead grew to 12 heading into the final frame when the Wildcats stormed back. They outscored the Wolves 18-10 in the final quarter but the comeback fell short in the four-point defeat. Lexee Hartsock led the way for WMU with 19 points and Allie McArtor added 10. Courtney Zaehringer kept the Wildcats in it with 14 points and Anna Hamilton had 13. WMU improves to 8-8 after the win and Columbus falls to 2-12.
In the boys game the Wolves managed the sweep controlling much of the game en route to a 50-33 win. The Wildcats hung tough in the first half only down 22-16. The Wolves wore them down in the second half to capture the 17-point victory. Cody McCreight had a solid day for WMU with 14 points and BJ Rodgers added 10. The Wolves improve to 2-13 and Columbus falls to 0-14.
WMU gets back on the court Tuesday hosting IMS and Columbus travels to IMS Friday.
