The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls soccer team opened their season Thursday night with a wild 5-4 overtime win in Wellman over the visiting Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union Wildcats.

The contest was back and forth all night with Mid-Prairie holding an early 1-0 lead before Columbus equalized midway through the first half. The Golden Hawks scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the first half with Libby Baker connecting in the 33rd minute and Katie Frantz in the 37th minute to put Mid-Prairie up 3-1 going to the half.

The Wildcats made adjustments at the break and came out firing, with Lizabeth Paz scoring three straight goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to catapult the Wildcats back on top. The Golden Hawks found the answer late with Baker tying the game on a breakaway in the 71st minute to send the match to overtime. In extra time the golden goal came five minutes in from Frantz.

Frantz finished with a hat trick to lead the Golden Hawks, Baker had a pair of tallies. Paz finished with a hat trick for Columbus. With the win Mid-Prairie is 1-0 on the season.
