Storms and recent rains have caused flooding across Iowa which are impacting cattle producers who are dealing with wet pastures, water-logged facilities, and manure management challenges.
So far this month Washington has had 5.23 inches of precipitation, above the normal 3.91 inches, most of it fell over three days last week. Beef specialist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Beth Doran says moving cattle to drier areas is important to prevent wet feet, which can lead to foot rot and lameness. She also recommends producers make sure animals are current on vaccinations, as soil and water-borne diseases can be present for months after flooding. Manage pastures and remove any debris.
