After a long three-season wait, the WACO girls’ basketball team will be back at it again on Tuesday night when they travel to take on Van Buren in their season opener.
The Warriors enter their new season under a new head coach after long-time coach Shannon Rugg left to take the reins at Washington. Now it’s Caylon DeVaul at the helm, who has also coached cross country and track and field at Lone Tree. He says the girls have adjusted well to his coaching style thus far.
“I’ve told our girls ‘I’m gonna be different than what Coach Rugg was; not that it’s better or it’s worse by any means, but he’s coached at WACO for a long time, so getting my routine down with how I run practices is going to be one of the biggest obstacle just because it’s going to be different,” DeVaul said.
“After the first week, they’re doing a pretty good job. I think they’re understanding how I run some of our practices, how our routines are going to be, and we’re going to be fine. I t’ll be good; it’s a bit of a change for them, but it’s going much better than I thought.”
Tuesday will bring a tough first test, as Van Buren enters the season ranked number eight in class 2A. Tipoff in Keosauqua is set for 7:30.
