The Washington Demon girls’ basketball team gave Shannon Rugg his first win as head coach last night, beating Eddyville-Blakesburg 47-31.
It was all Demons pretty much all day, with the only time playing from behind coming at 2-0 on the scoreboard. It was a one-point game at the end of one, but the Demons outscored the Rockets 12-5 in the second quarter to pull away. The Rockets got the deficit down to five points at some point in the third quarter, but the Demons would bring it back up.
Fouls were an issue for both teams, as both the Demons and the Rockets were in the double bonus at the beginning of the fourth quarter. There were also a lot of turnovers across the board, given that the Demons stole it away 26 times as a team.
Isabel Bailey led the way for the Demons, scoring a team-high 12 points and stealing it five times. Olivia Pacha also had a good game, putting up 10 points, eight rebounds and five steals.
The win brings them up to 1-0 on the young season. But even with the win in mind, coach Rugg sees room for improvement.
“As big as we are tonight, I don’t think we rebounded the ball very well tonight. That’s something we’ve talked about and working on, so obviously we need to do more work on it,” Rugg said. “As big as we are, we should be able to out-rebound anybody we play this year, and that’s a goal of ours.”
Their next game comes next Monday night on the road against Cedar Rapids Washington.
