The Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team opened up their season last night, falling at home to 14th-ranked Mediapolis 63-38.

The Bulldogs got out to a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter, and the lead was the same at halftime.  But the second half was a different story, with Mepo outscoring WMU 32-16 and taking the victory.

As a team, the Wolves shot 27 percent from the field and 20 percent from three.  They out-rebounded the Bulldogs on the defensive side, but Mepo’s plethora of offensive boards vaulted them over WMU in the overall totals.  Turnovers were killer for the Wolves, committing 30 throughout.

The loss moves them to 0-1 on the young season.  Their next game comes on Saturday at home against another ranked team, as they take on eighth-ranked Van Buren.
