It may be a week late, but the girls’ basketball season makes its way to Sigourney on Tuesday night when they take on bitter rival Keota in their season opener.
The Savages are coming off an outstanding season a year ago, finishing 18-4. They bring almost everyone back from that season, losing only three seniors in Autum Barthelman, Leah Carter and Brooke Waechter. Those three were the top three scorers on the team, however, and Waechter was the team’s leading rebounder, so they leave some big shoes to fill. Zach Tremmel says the build and play style of the team will be different as a result, but he thinks they’ll do just fine.
“We’re not going to be able to replace them individually, so it’s going to be more of a team effort this year,” Tremmel said. “In the past we’ve been very athletic and were able to press and get up and down. We’re a different team now. We’re built on size and getting the ball inside. We’ve got to get guards to take care of the ball and knock down open shots. I think we’ll have another successful season, it’s just going to be a different type of season than we’ve had the last couple of years.”
Their game against Keota on Tuesday is set to begin at 6:00.
