The Washington wrestling team makes its long-awaited return to the mats tonight, heading to Marengo for three duels against Iowa Valley, Benton Community and HLV.
The team returns a good chunk of its wrestlers from a year ago, including state qualifiers Walker Ikerd and Tristin Westphal-Edwards, who combined for a record of 55-3. The class of 2019 makes up a big chunk of this year’s team, so the Demons will be rolling with a pretty senior-heavy lineup this year. Head coach Brent Van Weelden has definitely liked what he’s seen from his guys go far.
“The coaches and I have talked quite a bit, and we’re very pleased with how hard they’re working,” Van Weelden said. “This may not be the most talented group we’ve ever had, but I think at this point we’ve had probably the best first week we’ve had since I’ve been here. So that’s real nice to see out of them.”
Tonight’s meet in Marengo is scheduled to start at 6:00.
