The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams hosted the Bellevue Comets Saturday at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman.
In games heard on KCII, the No. 7 Bellevue girls beat the No. 15 Mid-Prairie girls 65-40. The Comets started the game on a 14-1 run that lasted the entire first quarter. The Hawks opened the game on a 12 minute draught from the floor. After trailing 26-13 at the half, the Hawks held things at 13 points most of the third quarter but could get no closer as Bellevue sprinted to a 20 point fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Shae Becker led the Golden Hawks with 13 points, Maddie Nonnenmann added 10. With the loss, the Hawks are now 6-2 on the year.
The Mid-Prairie boys took a thrilling 56-54 win over the Comets. The Hawks fell behind 17-4 early, but rebounded with an 18-2 run of their own to climb back within 26-24 at half. The two teams would continue to hang tough and the Comets closed the third quarter with another run and would hold a 49-41 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Golden Hawks closed the game with a run of their own to tie the contest at 54 with just 10 seconds left. On Bellevue’s final possession, Tom Butters blocked the shot of Riley Konrardy and cleared the ball to Cale Robertson. While at midcourt with less than two seconds remaining Robertson found Dominic Pickard under the hoop and Pickard’s tip in at the buzzer gave the Hawks the win. Butters led Mid-Prairie with 24 points and 17 rebounds, Robertson added 14. With the win the Golden Hawks are now 4-3 on the season.
