In the last fiscal year, 2,146 people in 833 households in Washington County were served by HACAP, a seven percent increase from the year before. The Hawkeye Area Community Action Program is a non-profit organization that has worked to help those in Washington County for over 43 years. HACAP provided energy assistance to 467 low-income households, distributed nearly 180,000 pounds of food to 10 partner agencies across the county, and the Operation Home program stabilized six households with one or more homeless veterans. Also, in the past year there has been a 26% increase in the Operation BackPack program which provides food assistance to elementary students on the weekend. The program served 142 students in Ainsworth, Kalona, Washington, Riverside, and Wellman.
