Three people were killed and five others injured after a tractor-trailer overturned in rural Henry County Sunday and was struck by a van and car, according to the Iowa State Patrol. At 3:26 a.m., a semi was heading east on Highway 34 west of Mount Pleasant, near the Old Highway 34 overpass. The semi lost control and then overturned blocking both eastbound lanes. The driver of the semi was 68-year-old Wayne Salo of Sioux City. He was transported by Iowa State Patrol to the Henry County Health Center.
A van operated by 74-year-old Vicki Morrow of Ottumwa then struck the overturned semi. Morrow, along with 44-year-old Daniel Yutzy and 44-year-old Kathryn Yutzy of Bloomfield died at the scene. Others injured in the van were 48-year-old Suzanne Mast of Bloomfield, who was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital, and 48-year-old Henry Mast who was taken by ambulance to the Henry County Health Center.
The third vehicle involved was a sedan driven by 31-year-old Guylain Landa of Cedar Rapids. Landa was transported by ambulance to the Henry County Health Center, as was his passenger 27-year-old Shelda Florestal of Ottumwa. The Mount Pleasant Fire Department and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
