Parents in the Mid-Prairie School District are invited to the next Parent Academy, the second edition of the program.

Learning Design Coach Glenda Seward describes the event as an opportunity for parents in the community to get together and learn about some of the challenges and strategies of raising children. The district held their inaugural Parent Academy in the fall, which covered topics such as vaping, anxiety, and bullying.

Seward adds that the impact of the event goes beyond the lessons, “I think we’ve all heard the term that ‘it takes a village to raise children,’ and there’s very little that’s more powerful than a group of parents coming together to support other parents as they’re raising children. What we’re hoping for is to have parents getting more acquainted with each other, parents coming together in support of each other, and support of the school, and the school in support of the parents. It’s kind of a three-legged stool; you have the student, and the parents and family, and you have the school working together for a common goal.”

The academy will feature keynote speaker Dr. Lisa Strohman who established Digital Citizen Academy to help keep families safe from online dangers, as well as Dr. Jamie Kremswriter and Dr. Erin Oluffs, from the University of Iowa. The event on April 1st will include a complimentary meal and child care.
