The last of the ash trees on City of Washington property will be cut down. At Tuesday’s meeting, the City Council approved two companies to remove trees due to the Emerald Ash Borer. City Building and Zoning Official Steve Donnolly said there will always be additional hazardous trees even after the ash trees are removed, “Hopefully we’ll stay between, it’d be nice to stay between $10,000 and $15,000 a year, because you’re going to have hazardous trees in the right of way, lightning, whatever else you’re responsible for. We’ve taken care of all of the hazardous trees, all the ash trees.” The council awarded a bid of $11,900 to Midwest Tree Service to remove 23 trees and 18 stumps. And Browns Tree Service will remove 24 trees for $9,000. In total the City spent just over $112,000 to remove the trees when they anticipated it to be a $200,000 project.
