Snow volcanoes, ice cream made from snow, and building with just sheets of paper and tape to hold a book are just some of the challenges the Washington Public Library has presented during recent snow days. Librarian Jenisa Harris explains on days that school has been cancelled due to winter weather, the library posts video challenges for kids on their Facebook page. Often these are STEM activities. She shares where the inspiration came from, “I was inspired by the Johnson County Extension Office. They were doing Polar Vortex challenges, where they post every few hours an either STEM activity or fun activity they could do at home. And it was an easy, quick video. So I thought, ‘Oh! That’s so exciting, I could totally do that for the library.’ I feel like parents, and even students, are tired of the snow days and need something fun to do.” If classes are cancelled again this year, visit the Washington Library’s Facebook page for activities to do from home.
