A $316,000 change order to improve the emergency radio coverage in Washington County was approved unanimously by the board of supervisors Tuesday. Initially the new emergency radio project was for five towers across the county, however it was found that adding equipment at a sixth location could improve the coverage in the county’s southeast corner. Washington County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Shawn Ellingson explained why they added the equipment near Crawfordsville along Highway 218, “Countywide we’ve achieved the 95%, but in that specific area, we were a little uncomfortable with it. So that’s why we added it. But countywide they reached they’re 95%, but we wanted better coverage down in the area.” RACOM is the company that is upgrading the county’s communications system. Their $5.8 million bid was selected last summer. Currently, Washington County’s portable radios used by emergency personnel inside buildings is at 35% and with the new system it will be at or above 95%.
