More than 95,000 Iowans live with long-term disability due to traumatic brain injuries, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. On Friday, Governor Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation to bring awareness to brain injuries. Falls, vehicle crashes, and sports injuries are some of the causes of the 17,000 brain injuries Iowans receive medical attention for each year. Concussions are traumatic brain injuries. Symptoms for concussions can include headache, nausea, dizziness, blurred vision, neck pain, trouble concentrating or remembering, feeling mentally fatigued, and irritability. If a concussion is suspected, rest is important as well as assessing symptoms daily, as it can take one to three weeks for brain cells to recover with most concussions.
