The 2019-2020 calendar for Washington Community Schools has been approved. School will start August 23rd and is scheduled to end May 27th. The early out days for professional development have been moved from Wednesdays. Superintendent Willie Stone explained the change was to help keep pre-school students in a routine and avoid having an early out in the middle of the week. He said staff had looked at moving the early outs to Mondays but it wasn’t the best option, “We can’t do Mondays, we have too many junior high athletic events on Monday afternoons and what are junior high kids going to do for an hour and a half before they come back for, to try to get to an event. And idle hands don’t have great things to do, so they decided to move it to Fridays. And they moved it to Fridays because we have varsity athletics that night and most of our varsity athletics can get rides or are able to drive.”
Spring break next year will run from March 18th to the 20th. There are also six scheduled snow days built into next year’s calendar. The school board approved the calendar unanimously.
