One person died and another was injured in a single-vehicle wreck on Highway 218 in Washington County Wednesday morning. At 9:41 a.m. a vehicle in the southbound lanes of Highway 218 went into Goose Creek, about three miles north of G36. As heard live from the scene on KCII, traffic was reduced to one lane while emergency crews worked at the scene.
According to the Washington County Communications Office, one person was out of the vehicle and CPR was in progress, but another person was trapped.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the Pontiac Montana van was driven by 77-year-old Jerry Lee Coblentz of Washington. It went into the west ditch of the southbound lanes of the highway, lost control and the van came to rest on its top in the waterway. Coblentz was transported by Washington County Ambulance to Washington County Hospital and Clinics. Coblentz passed away. A passenger in the van, 75-year-old Mandy Ann Shetler of Kalona, was injured and transported by ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospital.
Iowa State Patrol, Ainsworth QRS, Ainsworth Fire Department, Riverside QRS, Riverside Fire Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County Ambulance, Washington Rescue, Johnson County Ambulance, and the Iowa Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
Drivers are reminded to slow down and move over for any vehicles on the side of the road with hazard or emergency lights activated.
