Iowa’s program that helps heat low-income homes during the cooler months will end its season April 1st. Iowa has a winter moratorium law where customers who qualify for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, or Weatherization Assistance Program are protected from natural gas or electricity being shut off from November 1st to April 1st. The Iowa Utilities Board is reminding energy assistance customers currently protected from service disconnection to contact their local utility company to discuss payment options and avoid disconnection. Disconnections could begin as soon as April 2. LIHEAP pays a portion of the utility bills.
