Don’t be fooled by phone scammers this April Fool’s Day. According to the Federal Trade Commision, thousands of people will be victims of thieves over the phone this year. Phone scams can come in all shapes or sizes. Some will try to convince you that you’ve won a prize, like a free or low-cost trip. Others will impersonate government officials to try to scare you into giving out information.
Often times they are trying to acquire information like your address, credit card information, and social security number. Some scammers can even manipulate caller ID so they can appear to be from your area, or imitate official phone numbers from law enforcement and government agencies.
If you get a call that is suspicious, hang up and report it to the FTC and local law enforcement.
