The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk soccer team opened the season with a win Monday, beating Highland on their home turf by a 3-0 score.
Aaron Slaubaugh got the scoring started for the Hawks with a goal in the 15th minute. He added another right before the half to give Mid-Prairie a 2-0 lead going to the break. He talked after the game about his night on offense. “We were trying to play it to the outside and then back into the middle to create chaos in the box for shots on goal. On my first goal it bounced off the goalie and I happened to be in the right spot to finish it. It was a little lucky. On the second goal it was a good pass from Zeus (Fugate).”
The two teams played evenly on the scoreboard through the first 30 minutes of the second half until Ashton VanWinkle broke free for the Golden Hawks third goal and that was enough to ice the game. To go along with the scoring, Mid-Prairie got a pair of assists from Nathan Cadena and a clean sheet from keeper Keaton Graber. Highland falls to 1-1 on the year as Mid-Prairie improves to 1-0. The Huskies take on Danville Tuesday while Mid-Prairie will meet West Liberty Thursday.
