Iowa’s Representative Dave Loebsack has again co-sponsored the Local Radio Freedom Act which opposes the imposition of a performance tax. The legislation reads, “That Congress should not impose any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge relating to the public performance of sound recordings on a local radio station for broadcasting sound recordings over-the-air, or on any business for such public performance of sound recordings.” It would hurt businesses and ultimately consumers who rely on local radio for news, weather, and entertainment. It also reads that “…For nearly a century, Congress has rejected repeated calls by the recording industry to impose a performance fee on local radio stations for simply playing music on the radio and upsetting the mutually beneficial relationship between local radio and the recording industry.” Local radio stations across the U.S. provide free publicity and promotion to performers with airplay, interviews, promotions, and more. The bipartisan resolution was introduced in the House in February and in March was referred to the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet.
