ims-3

The first marquee matchup of the soccer season is on the pitch Monday at Iowa Mennonite School when the No. 5 IMS boys soccer team hosts No. 13 Burlington Notre Dame in a Southeast Iowa Superconference Showdown.

IMS is off to a 2-0 start after a 4-0 win over Columbus and a 9-1 blasting of Highland last week. On the year Iowa Mennonite is led by Louis Etienne with six goals, third most in class 1A. Toby Chen is best on the team and fourth in the state with four assists. Blake Bontrager has spent 148 minutes in goal through the first two matches, stopping all six shots he has seen.

The Nikes enter tonight’s match with an overall record of 4-1. They have beaten Keokuk, Holy Trinity, Fort Madison and Wapello by a combined 31-0 while suffering a 1-0 setback against Davenport North. Notre Dame is led by the tandem of Sturgis Thornton and Jonah Marlow, each with six goals on the season, third most in the state. Marlow’s four assists are fourth most in 1A. TJ Schramm has spent 255 minutes in goal this year, stopping 10 of the 11 shots he has faced. These two teams met three times a season ago with IMS winning at Notre Dame in the regular season 2-1, Notre Dame winning the Superconference Tournament Championship on a neutral site at Mediapolis 3-1 and IMS beating Notre Dame in the playoffs 2-1 in Kalona. Action begins tonight at 5p.m. at IMS.
