Yard waste can be burned in the City of Washington. Trash cannot be burned. People are allowed to dispose of landscape waste, like grass clippings or sticks by burning them on the originating premises. The City Code reads that the burning of any leaves or other substances of any nature whatsoever on any City street, avenue, or boulevard is prohibited. Residents are reminded to not have open fires on windy days and to have a water source readily available to put out the fire if needed.
Yard waste in Washington can also be taken to the city’s facility at 1065 West Buchannan Street off of Highway 1. Another option for residents is to fill the brown recyclable yard waste bags and set them out to be picked up by city crews between April and October each year. The $1 bags may be purchased at City Hall.
