A Fairfield police officer charged with burglary after allegedly taking drugs from a veterinary office has pleaded not guilty. In February, 31-year-old Ryan Mills was arrested and charged with burglary in the second degree, a class C felony. According to the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations, a veterinary clinic in Fairfield reported a shortage of a narcotic from their inventory. During an internal investigation, an employee spotted Mills enter and exit the clinic prior to business hours. This information was reported to the Fairfield Police Department and Chief Dave Thomas reached out to the DCI. Mills was placed on administrative leave after a search found evidence of the burglary with his personal belongings. The prosecution was transferred to Washington County to avoid any conflicts. Mills pleaded not guilty and his trial is set to begin June 4th. Washington County Attorney John Gish was appointed as Special Prosecutor in the case.
