The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls soccer teams get a rare chance Friday to play at the University of Iowa Athletic Complex when they meet the West Branch Bears.
The Mid-Prairie boys come into the match with an overall record of 5-2, winners of four straight, including a 3-2 win over Danville in overtime on Monday where they were led by goals from Mason Hartley, Aaron Slaubaugh and Ashten VanWinkle. On the season the Golden Hawks are led by VanWinkle with eight goals. Nathan Cadena, Hartley and Byron Yoder share the team lead with two assists each. Dominic Pickard has stopped 14 of the 19 shots he has faced in goal for a 74% save percentage.
West Branch comes into the match with an overall record of 3-2 after a win over Prince of Peace on Thursday. On the season, the Bears are led by Gage Gingerich, Peyton Miller and Kelby Burger all with two goals. Gingerich has the team lead with three assists. In goal it’s Cael Fiderlein with 30 saves on 34 shots for an 88% save percentage. This is the first year West Branch has fielded a varsity squad.
The Mid-Prairie girls come into the match with an overall record of 2-3, after a 5-0 loss to Iowa City Regina on Tuesday in Wellman. For the season, the Hawks are led by Julia Boller and Caitlyn Riggan with two goals each. Boller also leads the team with two assists. Ainsley Lueck has stopped 19 of the 28 shots she has seen in goal for a 68% save percentage.
West Branch is winless in their first six matches of the season entering tonight. Last time out, the Bears were beaten by Anamosa 3-1. Chloe Pence leads West Branch with four goals scored. Taylor Thein has the team lead with a pair of assists. In goal, Courtney Jarrett has stopped 47 of the 63 shots she has faced for a 75% save percentage. West Branch did not have a varsity team a year ago. Action starts at 5p.m. and continues into the evening in Iowa City.
