New trash and recycling containers are en route to Washington and the city council approved amendments to the ordinance at their recent meeting. Residents will have one can for trash and another for all of their recycling. They will no longer have to sort the recyclable materials like plastic and cardboard. All of those containers will then be picked up by an automated truck.
At the council meeting, the first reading of amendments was approved where homeowners may have trash collection fees waived at homes while they are undergoing rehabilitation. Mayor Jaron Rosien said it would be used in rare circumstances, but is available, “If the premise has been vacant for over six months and is in a state of rehabilitation the property owner may apply administratively for suspension of collection of fees. Also, if the water service for a residential premise is shut off at the curb by request of the owner, collection fees shall not apply.” The trash fee will be put on the property’s water bill each month.
To apply for the waiver, residents will need to go to the City Administrator for approval. There is an appeal process if they disagree with the administrator’s decision. The new trash system will begin in July.
