One Washington mother who lost her daughter in a motorcycle wreck is urging drivers to be aware and safe. In 2014, Ronda Ruenger’s 26-year-old daughter Sherrena was driving her motorcycle when she was hit by an SUV and killed. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month across the U.S.

Ronda Ruenger and her husband Casey are advocates for accident prevention for both those on motorcycles and those behind the wheels of cars, and visits driver’s education classes to speak, “And so we talk a lot about the three-second rule. Before making a lane change or turns, to look twice because the motorcycles are harder to see because they’re smaller, And they’re harder to judge their distance, their speed and that. So take the three seconds to look twice, especially at high-risk areas like intersections, cross traffic, left-hand turns, lane changes, and coming on and off road ramps.” She encourages people on motorcycles to wear the full gear, including pants, long-sleeved shirts, gloves, eye protection, helmets, and boots. Last year in Iowa there were 42 motorcycle fatalities, of those 31 did not have helmets.
