A Sigourney High School student has been awarded a National Merit Scholarship. Senior Gregory Gott was named a National Merit Scholar and awarded a $2,500 scholarship. The National Merit pool began in October 2017 when over 1.6 million high school juniors from around the country took the Preliminary SAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. From there the pool is cut down to 16,000 semi-finalists based on their test results. Then about 15,000 students met the academic standards set forth by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and were named finalists. Once all the students are evaluated, 7,600 are named National Merit Scholars and receive a $2,500 scholarship. Gott was one of the 25 winners from Iowa announced by the NMSC this week. This year the NMSC will award $31 million to students from all across the United States.
