The Sigourney girls track team highlighted area squads at their home class 1A state-qualifying meet on Friday.
The Savages finished third out of 13 teams with 85 points while Pekin won it all with 126.5. Finishing in the top spot and automatically advancing to the state meet next week was Summer Barthelman in the long jump (16’8.5’’) and 400m hurdles (1:07.49). The shuttle hurdle relay team in Barthelman, Heidi Clarahan, Rylee Goldman, and Sloane Magill (1:09.60) also claimed a district crown. Second place events that will have to wait and see if they qualify include Barthelman in the 400m (59.89); Magill in the 100m hurdles (17.04); and Kaylee Weber in the shot put (35’3.5’’). Other area team scores included Winfield-Mt. Union in ninth with 48 points and WACO in 11th with 29. The Wolves’ Anna Hudson was a district champ in the shot put (36’8.5’’) and WACO didn’t have an automatic qualifier but Grace Conwell placed third in the 400m hurdles (1:13.18). Keota did not have a team score but Paige Thompson was 11th in the 3000m run (14:03.69).
On the boys’ side Winfield-Mt. Union had a fourth place finish with 66 points and Pekin managed the title sweep with 112. Sigourney placed fifth with 62.5, WACO ninth with 44.5, and Keota was 11th with 35. WMU’s Brandon Snowden will be busy at the Blue Oval, as he won the 100m (11.28), 200m (22.66), and was a part of the victorious 4x200m relay team along with Brody Barton, Dane Sweezer, and Juanito Piper (1:33.11). Sigourney’s Spencer Magill won a title in the high jump (6’2’’) and Payton Schauf had the longest heave in the discus (152’4’’) while placing second in the shot put (45’11.5’’). Colton Horak was the headliner for WACO, as he was second in the 110m hurdles (16.46) and 400m hurdles (57.64). Keota’s distance medley relay of JD Stout, Sam Sieren, Wyatt Sieren, and Justin Moeller nabbed first (3:42.89). Moeller also finished second in the long jump (20’7.5’’) and 800m (2:07.09).
The complete list of qualifiers for the state meet will be released this afternoon.
