Red and white stripes, and white stars on a field of blue will be on display as flags are put up and Memorial Day is observed Monday. Services will be held to honor those who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. American Legion Commander Michael York says it is important for this day to be recognized every year, “I will read a quote here from Franklin Delano Roosevelt, he said, ‘Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy today forget in time that men died to win them.’ And I think that’s important, because if we don’t do that people are bound to forget. We feel it’s really important to remember the price that was paid for our freedom.”

The Avenue of Flags in Washington and Elm Grove Cemetery is installed by Jones Eden Funeral Home. At 10:30 a.m. Monday at Washington High School a Memorial Day service for the community will be held. The keynote speaker is Governor Kim Reynolds.
